01 / OverviewFood Safety & Compliance

Food safety and compliance consulting for New Zealand food businesses, built on deep seafood-sector experience.

SIS provides food-safety and compliance as a dedicated practice — developing the Risk Management Programmes seafood processors run on and auditing their food-safety systems. We work with seafood companies and food businesses of all kinds.

New Zealand's food safety framework

Seafood is an animal product. Most seafood processors operate under the Animal Products Act 1999 and a registered Risk Management Programme (RMP) — a documented, HACCP-based system that controls hazards so product is fit for its intended purpose, verified by MPI / New Zealand Food Safety. Other food businesses — including supermarkets and domestic food outlets — generally operate a Food Control Plan under the Food Act 2014, which also relies on HACCP-based controls.

Common questions

Can SIS develop or amend our Risk Management Programme (RMP)?

Yes. We develop new Risk Management Programmes and amend existing ones under the Animal Products Act 1999, and prepare your team and documentation for MPI verification.

Do you carry out internal food safety audits?

Yes. We conduct internal food-safety audits for companies, reviewing your systems and day-to-day practice against your RMP or Food Control Plan.

Do seafood processors in New Zealand need a Risk Management Programme (RMP)?

Most businesses that process seafood for human consumption are primary processors under the Animal Products Act 1999 and must operate under a registered RMP verified by MPI / New Zealand Food Safety. Businesses selling only by retail may instead operate a Food Control Plan under the Food Act 2014.

What is the difference between an RMP and a Food Control Plan?

An RMP sits under the Animal Products Act 1999 and is used by processors of animal products such as seafood, especially where product is sold wholesale or exported. A Food Control Plan sits under the Food Act 2014 and is generally used by retail food businesses, supermarkets and food outlets. Both are HACCP-based food-safety systems.

Do you support freezer trawler operations?

Yes. We provide RMP and consultancy for seafood companies operating freezer trawlers.
