The Skipper Restricted Limits (SRL) course is the Maritime NZ approved training for the SRL licence. Here are the 2027 block course dates, what it costs and how long it takes from enrolment to the MNZ oral exam.
There are four intakes. Each starts with 19 weeks of guided self-directed study, followed by a 4-week block course in Picton, Bluff or Te Anau.

Study start marks the beginning of guided self-directed study. The 4-week block course and MNZ oral exam follow.
Fees for each intake are shown in the course dates table above. Each fee includes the MNZ oral exam fee of $300 + GST.
MNZ application, medical and eyesight test fees are separate from course fees.
The course takes 23 weeks from start date to the end of the block course:
Outstanding MNZ Training Record Book tasks are completed and signed off during the block course and before the MNZ oral exam.
Once you complete the course and pass the MNZ oral exam, we collate and prepare all required documentation for your SRL licence application to Maritime NZ.
Train locally: the block course is held in Picton, Bluff and Te Anau. The 4-week block course keeps time away from work and family to a minimum.
